New Improved cGMP Analogues to Target Rod Photoreceptor Degeneration

Researchers have developed a new compound called dithio-CN03, which they hope might provide a treatment for retinitis pigmentosa. High levels of a molecule called cGMP cause the death of these cells, and dithio-CN03 protects them from this type of cell death. Early tests show that dithio-CN03 effectively protects retinal cells; therefore, this is an area of interest for further study.

What this means for Usher syndrome: The initial study of this compound has been promising. However, further study is needed before researchers determine if it could be effective as a treatment for RP.
